The weather these days is no laughing matter. With so many people without power and lost residence, there are many reasons to be concerned! Although, we just turned our clocks back, we cannot do so with time. And yet, to help oneself get out of a pessimistic mood, study finds that humor is the key. Moping over what’s lost will not help get it back, but the future is still in our hands! What we CAN do, is make the best of our present. Studies show that laughter increases the endorphins, which in turn helps increase pain tolerance. In addition, as NY Times puts it, laughter may be a form of exercise! It is easier to live through the tough times when one is in a better disposition. The next time you feel a joke coming on, don’t stop it! Let it cheer someone’s day today!
What’s the best response to disasters?
As hurricane Sandy is sweeping through the North-East of the USA, it’s leaving a trail of mess behind it. As anything in life, effects of an event are greatly dependent on our reaction to the event, rather than the event itself. Although, there is a lot of damage that was done by Sandy so far, there was a lot prevented thanks to good planning on the part of the authorities. We stand to agree with Simon Sinek, who tweeted that ‘Givers advance the world. Takers advance themselves and hold the world back’. As we see how each politician and administration reacts to the effects of Sandy, we may be able to draw conclusions for ourselves. Such events definitely have a potential for uniting people- disastrous events contribute to the sense of community and our differences become insignificant as we struggle to survive. When a human life is at stake, we tend to save that life- no matter the differences of any sort. So, what is the best response to a disaster? Perhaps, any rescue effort and extending the help to the less fortunate ones, is the key. Since we cannot do much about the disaster itself, we can come through by doing what humans do best- being a human!
What to do with conflicts at work?
Differences of opinion are inevitable, as we know. However, some differences may be more unpleasant that others and lead to an array of emotienhanced events. So, how can a person prevent a difference from becoming a conflict? There are many suggestions around: from Dale Carnegie to Mind tools. Here’s a short version:
1. Identify goals or reasons for the fight (yours and co-worker’s). Perhaps , this fight is about a status rather than the issue at hand, and perhaps this goal can be achieved in a different way. For example, if the co-worker craves acknowledgement, a smile and a warm ‘good morning’ at the start of the day will reduce, or eliminate altogether, the co-worker’s desire to argue!
2. Speak the same language. No, not like English versus foreign. It implies rather to make sure that what you mean is what the other person hears, or that you both mean the same thing when you say a certain word, notion or a term.
3. Realize that not all differences are bad. There are many grey areas in life, and yes, two people can be right at the same time! You may be disagreeing on the aspects of the same issue, rather than the issue itself.
4. Not all problems have desired, or the only one, solution. Be willing to hear the other opinion and figure out how the two different perspectives can be utilized to achieve a greater good.
Have a wonderful day!

Chronograph measures the value of time
In the wake of September 11, one may be pressed to ponder on the meaning of time. It is said that time heals all wounds, time is money, time is the most valuable thing one can spend… And yet, how often do we reflect on its use? M. Scott Peck noted: “Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.” How do we come to value ourselves? The inventor of chronograph, Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, couldn’t be thinking about this before he invented it in 1822! He invented it to measure the velocity of missiles, the very thing that stops time for whoever is hit by it! But, we came to recognize that this, too, can be used for a positive purpose- like saving someone’s life when used by medical professionals, for example. Any piece from the Watchmaxx’s selection of chronograph watches- just like the time itself- can be used to maximize the potential of time! How will you use your time today?
