Girard Perregaux has over 220 years of watchmaking history, starting in 1791, when goldsmith and watchmaker Jean-François Bautte gathered professionals in every phase of watchmaking in a single entity. There in Geneva, for the first time, every step from engineering and design, through manufacture and final polishing of the timepiece were joined. The firm produced an array of jewelry and timepieces, and became well-known for its specialty watches, especially those shaped as miniature flowers, butterflies, and musical instruments. The firm was inherited by Jean’s son and son-in-law, and in 1906 it was acquired by the Girard-Perregaux company founded in 1852 by Constant Girard, a watchmaking expert famous for his advances in escapements, especially the tourbillon.
